Cystic Fibrosis Canada is a leading funder of cystic fibrosis (CF) research globally. In order to ensure that research funded is of the highest quality, Cystic Fibrosis Canada administers a rigorous peer-reviewed research competition. An open call process is used, whereby researchers from across Canada are invited to apply to Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s largest grants and awards competition of the year. All submitted applications are reviewed and ranked by a Scientific Review Panel in January.
This year, the Scientific Review Panel, comprised of a total of 16 expert researchers and clinicians, as well as 2 community stakeholders, met from January 19-21 in Toronto. During the meeting, each grant application is discussed, with researchers and clinicians commenting on the scientific merit of each application and potential impact of the study to the field and to patients, and community stakeholders commenting on the value of the project to the CF community. Applications are then scored and ranked, with these rankings serving as recommendations to Cystic Fibrosis Canada about which grants to fund. The Board of Directors is responsible for the final grant funding decisions.
