What’s your involvement with CF Canada (are you a volunteer, donor, event organizer, etc.)?
I am a fundraiser for CF Canada. Just this past fall, I published of book of poems to raise money for CF titled ’65: A Book of Poems.’ I am selling this poetry book and donating all the profits to CF in memory of my Dad’s cousin Eva Markvoort who passed away 7 years ago. I have had a great deal of support from my family, friends, and community. I was given a chance to speak on Global Morning News earlier in March, there was an article written about me in the New Westminster Record as well as an article about my efforts on the New Westminster school district website. This May, I will be participating in the CF walk, and hope to attend the CF Gala and Lawn Summer Nights. I have already surpassed by original goal of raising $2,000.
What is your connection to CF?
My Dad’s cousin, Eva Markvoort had Cystic Fibrosis and passed away on March 27, 2010. She loved art and the colour red. Even though I was only 5 years old when she died, I remember doing arts and crafts with her when she would come to babysit me. She was passionate about raising awareness and money for CF research and she inspired me to do the same.
What has been the greatest highlight of supporting CF Canada for you?
My greatest highlight of supporting CF is yet to come. I think it will be at the end of 2017 when I take all the money that I have raised and make my big donation to CF Canada. It will feel really wonderful to make a meaningful contribution.
Why do you think it’s important to support CF Canada?
I think it is important to support CF Canada because there are people living with CF but there is still no cure. Even though we are not scientists or doctors we still can make a difference by raising money and awareness and that is what CF Canada is here for.
What will #aworldwithoutCF mean to you?
It will mean that we have met our goal. That people will not have to struggle to breathe or have limitations due to that disease. It means that CF will stand for cure found.
