Shinerama

Shinerama Top 10

1. Highest Grossing Campaign
Breaking all previous fundraising records – Wilfrid Laurier University! In 2003, WLU raised over $177,000 with ‘Shine Day’, corporate golf tournament, Loonie Mile and ‘Bling Bling’.

2. Biggest 'Thing' Ever Shined
A Canadian warship! Students from Mount Saint Vincent University and Dalhousie University polished the HMCS Charlottetown from stem-to-stern to kick-off Shinerama 2003.

3. Most Famous Shoes Shined

  • Former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau
  • Runners-up
  • Former Premiers William Davis and Mike Harris (Ontario); Robert Bourassa (Quebec); Bill Bennett (BC); Ralph Klein (Alberta); Pat Binns (PEI) MuchMusic VJs Rick Campanelli and Jennifer Hollett
  • Famous hockey skates needed a buffing
  • Superstar Bobby Orr
  • Hockey Night in Canada's Ron McLean
  • Other notables
  • Toronto's Bata Shoe Museum President, Mrs. Sonja Bata
  • RCMP Mountie being 'buffed' on the steps of Parliament

4. Most Visible Advertising

  • Brandon University earned this honour in 1993 and 1994 by securing free Shinerama advertising in September on Lucerne milk cartons in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
  • A University of British Columbia student spotted the Lucerne milk carton, made a phone call and Shinerama was born at UBC the following year.

5. Most Exhausting Shinerama Events

  • Students from McMaster University in Hamilton (Ontario) raised money by pushing a car from Ottawa to Hamilton.
  • First-year engineering students at McMaster kept the spirit of this incredible feat alive – raising thousands of dollars every year – by pulling a bus through the streets of downtown Hamilton raising thousands of dollars

6. Largest Shinerama Posters

  • A huge, centrally-located billboard in Winnipeg was donated to the 1993 Shinerama campaign at the University of Manitoba.
  • St. Clair College (Windsor) had a giant billboard donated in 2001 for its Shinerama campaign.

7. Most Heated Rivalry

  • Bull vs Bungee – Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton (Alberta) vs Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary (Alberta). If N.A.I.T. raised the most money, S.A.I.T.'s campaign director would bungee jump in the West Edmonton Mall. If S.A.I.T.'s campaign brought in more donations, N.A.I.T.'s campaign director would ride a bull at The Calgary Stampede.
  • The loser had to shave the rival school's mascot into his hair and write a self-deprecating letter to newspapers at both schools – declaring the winner the better school!
  • One very angry bull was ridden the first year of the competition. The following year, one very courageous campaign director experienced the 'thrill' of bungee jumping

8. Loudest Campaign
Definitely the 1994 campaign at the University of Toronto. Musicians from the school's Marching Band entertained passers-by from the roof of the HMV building on Yonge Street!

9. Most Regrettable Campaign Promise
To shave your head if a certain amount of funds are raised. Several campaign directors have discovered this can be a dangerous promise to make – and keep!

10. Most Persistent Honours
“Stop the Bop” – 2001 Shinerama students at the University of Calgary (Alberta) threaten to play the song, “Mmmm … Bop” by Hanson, continuously over the school’s PA system until $1,000 is raised to fight CF. Twenty-one hours later, the song is finally turned off!
