Cystic Fibrosis Canada applauds today’s announcement by the Government of Canada directing $30 million in funding to improve Canada’s healthcare system

Cystic Fibrosis Canada applauds today’s announcement by the Government of Canada directing $30 million in new research funding to improve Canada’s healthcare system. This investment will provide support to multi-disciplinary teams of investigators and decision-makers to conduct research in two areas including chronic disease prevention and management.

“Today’s announcement by federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq and Saskatchewan Health Minister Don McMorris has the potential to positively impact individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) and those living with chronic diseases,” said Maureen Adamson, CEO of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. “This is a positive step towards innovative collaborative research to help improve the health outcomes for people with chronic diseases and sharing of best practices. We welcome today’s announcement to further enhance our partnership with the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR).”

Earlier this week, Cystic Fibrosis Canada called on the federal government to support a national health care innovation agenda and welcomed the announcement by the Council of Federation concerning the establishment of a Health Care Innovation Working Group.

"This additional funding of $30 million towards health research can help open more doors to innovative breakthrough research which could help Canadians living with CF," said Ken Chan, Vice President of Advocacy and Partnerships at Cystic Fibrosis Canada. “We welcome the continued partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in the fight against cystic fibrosis.”

As a global leader in CF research, Cystic Fibrosis Canada provides funds to advance research and health care excellence across the country as we set our sights on finding a cure for CF. Cystic Fibrosis Canada invested nearly $6.5 million to fund 56 promising research projects, as well as more than 50 fellows and students, and delivered more than $2 million to fund clinical care programs in Canada in 2011/2012.
