Cystic Fibrosis Canada policy entitles a training award recipient to a fully paid maternity or paternity leave for up to six months, extending the award duration by the length of the leave. If a trainee is eligible to receive Canadian Employment Insurance (EI) benefits during the course of his/her maternity/parental leave (as many institutions employ different methods for administering training awards thus impacting on a trainee's ability to collect Employment Insurance), Cystic Fibrosis Canada would "top-up" an exercised EI benefit such that his/her total income would equal 100% of his/her regular stipend amount.
Once Cystic Fibrosis Canada is officially informed in writing that a trainee is taking a parental leave, Cystic Fibrosis Canada sends a letter to him/her describing our policy. The policy states that Cystic Fibrosis Canada will forward regular quarterly award installments to the institution, in trust, for the pre-approved granting period. These installments will continue uninterrupted through the maternity leave. In addition, a six-month extension in funding and duration will be added to the fellow or student’s training award.
A copy of this letter must be co-signed by both the supervisor and the appropriate financial officer at the host institution and returned to Cystic Fibrosis Canada at least two weeks prior to the anticipated start date of the maternity leave, along with the following documentation:
Upon conclusion of the maternity/parental leave, written confirmation from the research supervisor that training has resumed must be submitted to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
Please direct requests for maternity/parental leave or questions regarding the policy to Manager, Research Programs.
