Imagine a World Without Cystic Fibrosis May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month
May 1, 2015

April 29, 2015 (Toronto, ON) ― Cystic Fibrosis Canada calls on every Canadian to join the fight against cystic fibrosis (CF) during Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month in May, and watch A World Without Cystic Fibrosis, a short video that highlights some of the challenges faced by those living with CF.

Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. Of the Canadians who lost their battle to cystic fibrosis in 2013, half were under 35 years old. There is no cure, but there is hope.

Life expectancy for Canadians with this devastating disease has increased thanks to investments in CF research that have led to groundbreaking new treatments. In the 1960s, children diagnosed with cystic fibrosis did not live long enough to attend kindergarten. Today, nearly 60 per cent of Canadians with cystic fibrosis are living into adulthood.

“We continue to invest in world-leading innovative CF research and care, but we can only continue to do this with the generous support of Canadians. May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month and I invite all Canadians to join the World Without CF movement as champions of our great cause,” says Norma Beauchamp, President and CEO.

Thirteen-year-old Madi Vanstone, knows firsthand the challenges of living with cystic fibrosis after being diagnosed with the disease as a baby. “People with CF like me never get a day off from hours of therapy and dozens of medications,” notes Vanstone. “I hope every Canadian will join me by participating or sponsoring a walker in CARSTAR’s Great Strides Walk™ for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.”

CARSTAR Automotive Canada Inc. will donate $5 (up to $100,000) to Cystic Fibrosis Canada for every social tweet, retweet or share on Twitter or Facebook during the month of May that includes the #AWorldWithoutCF hashtag. Join the conversation and help fund life-saving research and care to help Canadians with CF live longer, healthier lives.

Other ways to get involved and help to support Canadians living with cystic fibrosis throughout May: participate in, or sponsor a walker in, CARSTAR’s Great Strides™ Walk for Cystic Fibrosis Canada; share news about the A World Without Cystic Fibrosis campaign on social media using the hashtag #AWorldWithoutCF; share stories about cystic fibrosis with elected officials by writing, participating in the events and sharing information about activities going on across the country; or by volunteering through a local Cystic Fibrosis Canada Chapter. Canadians can donate to support life-saving CF research and care at

Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. It is a multi-system disease that affects mainly the lungs and the digestive system. In the lungs, where the effects are most devastating, a build-up of thick mucus causes severe respiratory problems. Mucus and protein also build up in the digestive tract, making it difficult to digest and absorb nutrients from food. As improved therapies have helped to address the malnutrition issues, ultimately most deaths related to cystic fibrosis are due to lung disease. There is no cure.

Cystic Fibrosis Canada

Cystic Fibrosis Canada is one of the world’s top three charitable organizations committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and is an internationally-recognized leader in funding CF research, innovation, and clinical care. We invest more funding in life-saving CF research and care than any other non-governmental agency in Canada. Since 1960, Cystic Fibrosis Canada has invested nearly $160 million in leading research, care and advocacy, resulting in one of the world’s highest median survival rates for Canadians living with cystic fibrosis.
