Upopolis, Camp Maple Leaf and Cystic Fibrosis Canada are teaming up to support youth with CF. Over 5 days, Camp Fromaway provides children from 11-17 years-old from across Canada who live with CF the opportunity to meet each other while participating in fun daily camp activities. Camp activities are led by professional Child Life Specialists. All activity supplies will be delivered by mail before camp begins!
On camp days, campers will log onto a secure online platform and be greeted by professional child life specialists and a group of other youth who understand what it’s like to live with CF. The two hours of camp each day will be filled with guided and supervised activities including therapeutic and illness-related activities as well as programs like tie-dye, fear factor, colour wars, scavenger hunts, and more.
Campers will meet others just like themselves. This can help them find a sense of belonging, learn coping skills, and reduce feelings of social isolation.
22 youth attended Camp Fromaway in 2024, and shared great feedback afterwards including:
- One 10-year-old wrote in response to ‘If another youth were to ask you about Camp Fromaway, what would you say to them?"
: “Go for it! Super fun! You feel a part of a group who understands you!”?
- One parent shared: "Definitely sign up your child! Nice to see your child feel like people can relate to what they go through."
- Another 11-year-old, camper answered in response to “Did you find that this camp allowed you to connect with other youth with CF?"
: "Yes I liked how there were people that I knew I wouldn’t be embarrassed to do my medicine in front of”??
